ビルゲイツのお話

Bill Gatesが中学生とのきに通っていた私立学校Lakesideスクールには、全米初ともいえる父母会主催のコンピュータクラブがあって、そこでコンピュータに触れることができたのだ。1960年代に中学生がコンピュータに触れることができる場所なんて、ここ以外にはなかったかもしれない。Gates少年はここでプログラミングを覚えるのだ。しかし、すぐにタイムチャージの金額が父母会の予算を超えてしまう。すると、たまたま父母会の中に、Washington大のコンピュータ資産を企業利用のためにリースを行う会社の創業者がいて、Gates少年のためにそのWashington大のコンピュータを利用する便宜を図ってくれたのだ。そして更に幸運なことに、その会社はGatesの家から徒歩で行ける距離であり、かつ物理学科のために割り当てられた時間割り当てのうち、午前3時から午前6時までという、誰も利用していない空白の時間帯をみつけたのだ。だから、Gates少年はこの時間を使うべく真夜中に家を抜け出し、徒歩またはバスで会社に向かって、好きなだけコンピュータに触れることができたのだ。つまり、1960年代後半、1970年代前半で世界で最もコンピュータを利用していた中学・高校生は誰かといえば、それはBill Gatesだったのだ。
